02 · Inside a class
What Children Learn in Class
- Get moving: warm-ups, rolling and coordination drills.
- Learn a skill: age-appropriate self-defence taught through games, pad work and instruction.
- Practise together: controlled partner drills, with children paired by age.
Children learn “Matte” — stop. An instructor or child can call it to end a drill. The belt system makes progress visible.

Parent FAQs
Does my child need experience?
No previous martial arts experience is needed. Beginners are welcome, and the belt system gives children a way to see their progress.
What if my child is shy?
Your child can watch from the side and join in when ready. Parents are welcome to stay and watch, too.
Is there contact in class?
Yes, controlled contact through pad work and partner drills. Children are paired by age. Everyone learns Matte, meaning stop: an instructor or child can call it to stop a drill. Sparring comes later and requires its own gear.
Can a child younger than five join?
The youngest group is JK/SK, ages 5–6. Regular kids classes start at age five.
Is there a family discount?
The regular family discount is $20/month off every family membership, including the first.
