What is Krav Maga?
Krav Maga was created by Imi Lichtenfeld prior to WWII in Czechoslovakia. In 1948 he became the Chief Instructor of the IDF School of Combat Fitness. Krav Maga is still taught to all members of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) as their official hand-to-hand combat system. Its influence today can be seen in military and law enforcement training across the globe.

The guiding principles of Krav Maga
- Neutralizing Threats
- Simultaneous Defensive and Offensive Maneuvers
- Avoiding Injury
- Utilizing Improvised Weapons
- Targeting Vulnerable Parts of the Body
The goal of Krav Maga is to end any altercation or attack as quickly as possible. The objective of Krav Maga training is to teach students basic self-defense and counterattack methods utilizing an economy of movement in realistic simulations to protect human life.
Krav Maga style & Technique
The style of Krav Maga relies on natural body motions that are simple, efficient and quick. Training begins with self-defense methods. This training is extremely beneficial to those individuals who have never received any formal instruction in martial arts. It is designed to provide students of any age or gender self-confidence, the ability to stay calm under duress and restraint.
The second part of Krav Maga is designed to train people how to engage in defensive hand-to-hand combat against armed and unarmed attackers. Using a variety of kicks and strikes targeting vulnerable areas of the human body, the goal is to incapacitate any attacker within the first few seconds of an engagement. Training includes simulated attacks by an individual and multiple attackers.
Krav Maga Training for Everyone
Anyone can participate in Krav Maga training regardless of gender, age or physical condition. The techniques rely on the individual being able to move quickly and efficiently, but the implementation of methods is not as strict as many martial arts. That isn’t meant to imply that Krav Maga is less disciplined. Ultimately function outweighs form. Working with the tools bestowed upon the individual is far more important than being able to perfectly model techniques.
Aside from teaching people from every walk of life how to defend themselves in a variety of life-threatening situations, Krav Maga has many other benefits. Most students report they experience a significant increase in self-confidence, self-discipline and self-awareness. Additionally, those with physical limitations or disabilities typically experience an increase in physical strength and agility.
The addition of Krav Maga instruction in Thornhill will provide students with training that could one day save their lives. Instruction is open to all ages. If you’d like to find out more, you can read more here and even sign up for a free class.
